The Water Crisis
For thousands of families living in Azad Kashmir’s remote and mountainous regions, access to safe drinking water is a matter of daily struggle. Azad Kashmir is experiencing a worsening water crisis, with some communities relying on a 13-kilometre-distance water source. According to research, 60% of all residents in the capital city’s region, Muzaffarabad, rely on spring water. This spring water, however, has been contaminated by sewage, rendering it unfit and hazardous for human consumption.
Moreover, the contamination of spring water and the difficulty of reaching distant, unreachable natural water sources combine to worsen Azad Kashmir’s ongoing water crisis. This is because communities rely on natural water sources such as springs, rivers, and reservoirs. Most of these are difficult to access and pose significant risks to those approaching them because of the lack of roads. Furthermore, most of these water sources are located far from residential areas, requiring one to walk for hours each day to fetch water.
Climate change has exacerbated the water crisis by causing either a severe lack of rainfall or flooding, causing water sources to become contaminated and completely unsafe for human consumption.
